MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

My Fellow Jamaicans,

My Fellow Jamaicans,

Thank you for your kind support over these many months. It has been my honor and privilege to serve as the President of the Jamaica Association of Rhode Island. My fellow Jamaicans, I do not take this honor lightly. It is my promise, and my commitment to work as hard as I can, and as smart as I can in collaboration with my executive team to ensure that the Vision and Mission of JARI comes to fruition. This task will not be easy, but as Jamaicans, we know how to “roll up our sleeves” and do what is necessary for the good of all of us.

Nine months ago, we set out on an incredible journey of bringing together Jamaicans, and people who admire our rich heritage and culture. Our goal is to support and advance the economic, political, social, and cultural interest of all Jamaicans here in the local Diaspora and back in the homeland.

So, let me share with you some of the amazing achievements that my team and I have been able to accomplish. We have:

  1. Secured the Federal Identification number.
  2. Secured our 501-C-3 tax exempt status which will allow to secure federal, state and local grant money as well as receive contributions which will allow us to advance our agenda.
  3. Completed the Bylaws which governs the organization.
  4. Launched a very successful Independence Day Celebration which saw over 1000 people on one of the rainiest days of last August.
  5. We gave our first scholarship to a deserving college student who met the criteria of educational excellence. The scholarship amount was $600.

My fellow Jamaicans, the road has not been easy. In fact, it has been quite difficult but my resolve to lead this organization into the 21st century is strong. As your President it is also my commitment to ensure that this esteemed body live up to the ideals and visions that we have unanimously agreed on:

  1. To be a unified voice for all Jamaicans living in Rhode Island
  2. To provide leadership while advancing the cause of Jamaican interest
  3. To promote the Jamaican culture and brand
  4. To commit to community service
  5. To actively stand up for justice
  6. To live by the ideals expressed in the Jamaican National Anthem

Moving forward, here are some of our action plans for the growth and development of JARI:

  • It is important that we continue rapid and sustained growth of our membership. All of us must be an Ambassador for this prestigious organization. All of us are charged with the task of recruiting and inviting new members to our organization.
  • Highlight, support, and celebrate the success of each other as well as identifying members or other Jamaicans who need our help right here in Rhode Island.
  • Actively engage in the political process in Rhode Island.
  • We need to reach out to communities and the government in Jamaica to work to influence change and create opportunities in the homeland.

Finally, let me say thank you to the dedicated Board Members who give liberally of their time to help me grow this great organization. To our members We are so grateful for your involvement, our best days are ahead of us.

Remember “Out of Many One People “.

Respectfully yours,
Desmond A. Ranglin
